RC Tiwari is a three-star general of the Indian Army who has served in various command positions in the army. He came into limelight after his appointment as the General Officer Commander (GOC) of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army in December 2023.

Wiki/Biography

Ram Chander Tiwari was born in India. After completing his schooling, Tiwari joined the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. There he received military training for three years. Subsequently, he joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand), where he trained for a year. He completed his training in 1987. RC Tiwari is an alumnus of the Defense Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington. There he earned a master’s degree in strategic studies. He then earned a Master of Philosophy degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National Defense College (NDC) in New Delhi. He has also completed Defense Management course from College of Defense Management (CDM) in Secunderabad, Telangana.

After completing his military training in 1987, Ram Chander Tiwari was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Kumaon Regiment. Soon after commissioning, he moved to Belgaum, Karnataka, where he completed the basic military course. He commanded a company of his battalion as a Major. Subsequently, he reported to Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, where he underwent the Junior Command (JC) course. He served as second-in-command, also known as 2IC, of ​​his battalion as a lieutenant colonel. As a colonel, he commanded a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in the then state of Jammu and Kashmir. Under his command, the battalion played a vital role in countering terrorism in Kashmir. After being promoted as Brigadier he commanded a front line high altitude brigade of the Indian Army. After this he went to serve in the United Nations (UN). As a major general, he served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Infantry Division, popularly known as the Black Cat Division, at Gangtok.

Later he became Lieutenant General. On 1 March 2022, Tiwari became the commander of Kohima-based 3 Corps, also known as Spear Corps. He succeeded Lieutenant General Johnson P. Mathew and served in the post till 6 March 2023.

He was later appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Jaipur headquartered South Western Command of the Indian Army. After completing his tenure there, he was appointed commander of the North India region.

On January 1, 2024, RC Tiwari took over command of the Kolkata-based Eastern Command from Lieutenant General RP Kalita.
