Just after it was revealed that he had a white Confederate ancestor, internet trolls were quick to target LeVar Burton.
As previously reported, Burton discovered he was related to a man named James Henry Dixon during his recent appearance on PBS. Find your roots. The man was described as a white southerner who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After leaving the service, he became a farmer. Dixon died in 1906. He was the father of nine children and 40 grandchildren.
Upon learning about his ancestor, LeVar Burton had some ideas. “Right now there is a conflict inside me,” he said. However the reading the rainbow Star said he felt the discovery was a “path” that was opening up.
“Knowing what I know about the history of this nation,” he continued. “I’ve wanted to, especially right now, that I think as Americans we need to have this conversation about who we are and how we got here.”
LeVar Burton also said he would have “fought with someone” if he had been previously told about his white ancestor.
After posting the clip from the show on X, Burton quickly took on internet trolls. One got very personal with his comment. “It seems a little strange that I have such a problem with having white ancestors,” the troll wrote. “Dude, you were on a show completely built around saying we got over petty things like that. LeVar Burton Quickly Responds to Internet Troll About His Ancestry
Not long after the internet troll made his comment, LeVar Burton responded in the best way possible.
“Either you are an insensitive troll or you have an acute lack of understanding of humanity,” Burton unleashed. “It is one thing to know something on an intellectual level, and another entirely to know an emotional truth that is both surprising and totally unexpected.”
The troll once again approached Burton and said, “No, LaVar, ‘I would have fought you’ is very different from ‘surprising and totally unexpected.'” They then said that they were not trolling or that they lacked sharp understanding. They also accused him of humiliating them. “Your reaction was your reaction,” they added.
LeVar Burton responded by indicating the correct way to spell his name and advised trolling so as not to misrepresent his comment. “The reaction that bothers you was conversational and immediately followed by laughter,” Burton added. “You see what you want to see. Your attention is focused on what you feel you can criticize from a place of superiority. I see you and I will not waste any more time with you.”
