Leo explained that he was originally scheduled to play Bureau of Investigation agent Tom White, who was taken over by Jesse Plemons.
The reason it was changed was because he and director Martin Scorsese realized that Lily Gladstone’s Mollie Burkhart needed to be at the center of the story instead of focusing on law enforcement.
Leo now plays Ernest, Mollie’s husband.
“I just didn’t feel like I got to the heart of the matter,” he shared in the article. “We weren’t immersed in Osage history. There was a little, little scene between Mollie [who is Osage] and Ernest, which sparked so much emotion in us during the reading, and we just started delving into what that relationship was, because it was so twisted and strange and unlike anything I had experienced before.”
Here is the synopsis of the film: In the early 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became one of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white intruders, who manipulated, extorted, and stole all the Osage money they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the unlikely romance of Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Gladstone), Flower Moon Killers is an epic western crime saga, where real love intersects with unspeakable betrayal.
The film will officially hit theaters on October 20, 2023, before streaming on Apple TV+.
