It was during that time that he met Rajeev Khandelwal, both of whom decided to start an organization to help India’s migrant workers live a better life. According to Rajeev,

It all started 15 years ago, when we saw a cluster in our district in Rajkot, Gujarat. We were astonished to find 15-20 people living in a small, crowded room, some of them suffering from tuberculosis, with no sign of medical care, food or other essentials. It was shocking to see children, families who had been working for years, having neither money nor any savings to survive. The whole situation was worrying. For the first few days we tried to interact with them because they lived in our village and we knew them, but their living conditions were an eye-opener for us.

According to Krishnavatar,

It was not easy in the beginning. We have come this far but the journey has been difficult, progress has been slow and then we achieved some stability. When we started meeting migrant workers, we realized that they are in large numbers and travel to other cities for work. Looking at that, we knew we had to think big and scale. The other big difficulty was to reach out to the unions that do similar work, make them understand the seriousness of the situation so that they know that these lives need to be taken care of and that’s how our journey began.
