Career
Benson was undefeated (14-0 with a 1.40 ERA) during his junior year at the University, striking out 178 batters in 142 innings pitched. He later led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament. Benson was selected as the college baseball player of the year. He was named Baseball America Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year as a Tiger. Furthermore, he left Clemson before receiving his degree. As for his professional career, Benson was selected first overall in the 1996 Major League Baseball draft.
On April 9, 1999, he made his big league debut. Furthermore, his best season came with Pittsburgh in 2000, when he set career highs in earned run average, strikeouts, innings pitched and games played, as well as his only double-digit strikeout games.
