Koena started her modeling career when she was in school. In 2003, she won the beauty pageant Gladrags Mega Model India. She was the first runner up of the Miss Intercontinental Pageant 2003, which was held in Germany. She has appeared in advertisements for some of the popular brands like ACP Whiskey, Mirinda, Clinic All Clear, Maruti Alto and has walked the ramp for several fashion weeks in Milan and Beijing.

Before starting her acting career, Koena Mitra was seen in music videos of songs like Stereo Nation’s Ishq, Aaj Ki Raat, Akh Teri and Jasbir Jassi’s Channo.
She made her first Bollywood appearance in the film “Road” (2002), in which she appeared in the song “Khullam Khulla”. Her Bollywood debut as an actor was in Sanjay Gupta’s “Musafir” (2004), in which she played the role of ‘Lara’.

She then appeared in several commercial hits such as “Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena” (2005), “Apna Sapna Money Money” (2006), and “Anamika” (2008). In 2009, she first appeared in a Tamil film “Ayan” (2009) in the item number ‘Honey Honey’. She made her acting debut in 2010 with the Tamil film “Aasal”.
She made her Bengali debut in 2015 with the film “Besh Korechi Prem Korechi”.

- In 2019, a model named Poonam Sethi had filed a case against Koena, claiming that Koena had borrowed money from her and failed to return it. Koena gave a check of Rs 3 lakh to Poonam, but the check bounced. Reportedly, a legal notice was sent to Koena, to which she did not respond. After the hearing, the Metropolitan Court convicted Koena and sentenced him to 6 months simple imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay Rs. Poonam got Rs 4.64 lakh including interest of Rs 1.64 lakh. Koena called this case completely fake and said that she has been implicated in this matter.
- In 2017, Koena had filed a case against a stranger who was harassing her by calling her using different numbers. The case was registered under IPC section 509 (word, gesture or gesture intended to insult the dignity of a woman).
- In 2010, Koena was criticized a lot for undergoing nose surgery, which went very wrong. Due to this he missed many of his projects at that time.
