Buckingham Palace officials announced on Monday, February 5, that King Charles III is currently battling cancer. The announcement comes just days after the royal was discharged from hospital following planned medical treatment.
According to the statement, while doctors were assisting King Charles III with a benign enlarged prostate, a new cause for concern was discovered. Tests confirmed that he had a form of cancer.
“His Majesty began a regular treatment program today, during which time doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties,” the statement read. “During this period, Her Majesty will continue to conduct state affairs and official procedures as usual.”
Buckingham Palace further reports that the King is grateful to his medical team for their “quick” intervention, which was made possible by his recent hospital procedure. He “remains entirely positive about the treatment received and looks forward to returning to full public duties as soon as possible.”
The Palace added that King Charles III has decided to share his diagnosis to avoid speculation about his health. He also hopes transparency will help the public understand everyone affected by cancer.
King Charles III has been the subject of much speculation about his health in recent years. According Today, the royal has been diagnosed with COVID-19 twice. There was also concern about his swollen fingers and hands. Concern arose after photos of his 2019 trip to the Solomon Islands were published.
Other previous health problems include having a non-cancerous growth removed from his face and hernia surgery. He also suffered numerous sports injuries in his youth.
Doctors believed that King Charles III had a chance of having a healthy longevity like his parents.
Just after King Charles III was made king of England, many were worried that he would lead the nation at the age of 70.
However, some health experts believed he had a chance of having a healthy longevity like his parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. They both lived to be 90 years old.
“King Charles, whose mother lived to be 96 and his father died at 99, may be looking forward to a decent reign despite starting at 73,” Andrew Steele, a British scientist, told Today.
Health experts also addressed some concerns for King Charles III, which included swollen hands and fingers. One expert, Dr. Jeffrey Linder, chief of internal medicine at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, said the symptoms could include heart, liver and kidney disease.
“The feet and ankles are usually the first affected,” Dr. Linder said. “And the swelling usually has to be quite advanced to affect the hands. For what it’s worth, I haven’t noticed any obvious swelling in her leg or ankle in recent photos of her wearing a kilt.”
Dr. Linder also noted that the cause of bloating could be fluid retention. Other medical conditions include osteoarthritis or arthritis. He listed rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and other forms of arthritis or skin inflammation as other possible causes. “However, I would expect most of these conditions to be associated with other symptoms,” he added. “Like marked joint pain, fever, or skin rashes.”
King Charles III assured the public over the years that, despite being over 70 years old, he was in good health. He also pledged to serve his country “for as long as God grants him.”
