In the late 1980s, Potter joined the Brooklyn Central Police Department as a patrol officer to begin his law enforcement career. She rose through the ranks over the next three decades, working as a union commissioner, community police officer, and field training officer. She was one of the department’s highest ranking officers after being promoted to sergeant in 2007.
Throughout his career, Potter has received a number of honors and recognitions for his contributions. She was recognized in 2006 for helping capture a criminal who was the subject of a high-speed chase. She was among several police officers honored in 2017 for their actions following a shooting at a nearby nightclub.
Daunte Wright was shot to death by Potter on April 11, 2021 in Central Brooklyn, Minnesota during a routine stop. Police said Potter intended to use the Taser, but accidentally pulled out his gun and fired one shot, hitting Wright in the chest. Wright then sped into his car, but crashed shortly after and died of his injuries there.
Potter was charged with second-degree manslaughter following the shooting, which prompted her to resign from the Central Brooklyn police station. Her trial will begin in the coming months.
