Khushboo Sundar is a prominent South Indian actress, film producer and television presenter who joined Indian politics in 2010. He has acted in more than 200 Indian films. Khushboo has received three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards including the Kalaimamani Award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for her outstanding contribution to cinema. He also earned the Kerala State Film Award in 2006.

According to Khushboo, her incredible transformation started during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when her weight dropped to around 93 kg. Sharing the milestone in her weight loss journey, she said that the transformation was the result of doing all the household chores and incorporating a fitness regimen that included yoga, planks and diet control.

His father’s name is not known. When Khushboo was sixteen years old, she left her father’s house with her mother and three brothers. In an interview in 2018 he said,
I rebelled very early when I decided to speak out against my father and kick my mother and brothers out of the family. Because I didn’t like the way he said that a woman’s status is somewhere or the other. He was an abusive husband.
He further explained his family circumstances,
I still remember the date. That was 12 September 1986. My father told me that one day you will come to us crawling on all fours and begging. I told him I would kill my brothers and mother and jump in front of a moving train, but would never come back to you.”
In December 2020, Khushboo revealed in a video interview on national television that her father used to sexually and physically abuse Khushboo and her mother.
His mother-in-law’s name is Deivanai Chidambaram.

Khushboo Sundar was the domestic partner of Prabhu Ganesan from 1991 to 1994. Both of them fell in love with each other on the sets of the film Chinna Thambi. At that time Prabhu Ganesan was already married. Khushboo and Prabhu’s relationship was opposed by Prabhu’s father Sivaji Ganesan, as Prabhu was already married to someone else. Hence, the couple decided to end their relationship in 1994 with mutual consent.

Khushboo started working in Hindi films in 1978 as a child artiste. Nakhat became Khushboo on the sets of her first film ‘The Burning Train’, in which she was seen singing the song ‘Teri Hai Zameen’. In an interview he told about changing his name,
Everyone used to ask me the meaning of my name. It is an Urdu name which means Fragrance or Fragrance in Hindi. So I became Khushboo.”
Soon, Khushboo Sundar appeared as a child artiste in various Hindi films, including Naseeb (1997), Laawaris (1981), Kaalia (1981), Dard Ka Rishta and Bemisaal (1982).
In 1982, Khushboo became a popular child artiste after performing in the fairy song “Main Pariyon Ki Shehzadi” from the film Dard Ka Rishta. The song was a blockbuster hit and is still very popular in school annual functions and children’s parties at home.
In 1985, Khushboo was seen in the song ‘Bol Baby Bol, Rock n Roll’ with Javed Jaffrey in the film ‘Meri Jung’. In the same year, Khushboo made her first screen appearance as a lead actress in the film ‘Jaanu’ opposite Jackie Shroff.
In 1986, she appeared with Govinda in the film ‘Tan-Badan’. Soon she was seen in a supporting role in the film ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin’ with Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit. In this film, Khushboo appeared in a solo song, which was a megahit and is popularly played in many Indian wedding ceremonies even today.
After her last screenplay in the Hindi film ‘Deewana Mujh Sa Nahin’, Khushboo mainly acted in South Indian films. Since then she is living in Chennai. In 1986, she made her film debut in the Telugu film ‘Kaliyuga Pandavulu’ opposite Telugu actor Venkatesh. Soon, he started signing Tamil films as well. Since then, she has appeared in over 150 South Indian films. Khushboo Sundar romanced many South Indian actors including Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Tiger Prabhakar, Ravichandran, Suresh Gopi, Satyaraj, Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Chiranjeevi, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh. Khushboo did more than 100 Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu films. Uncle Bun (1991), Vridhanmare Sookshikuka (1995), Independence (1999), Manathe Kottaram (1994), Kaiyoppu (2007), and Mr. Marumkan (2012) are some of his famous Malayalam films. Randheera (1987), Anjada Gandu (1988), Shanti Kranti (1991), Yugapurusha (1989), Gagana (1989), Aunty Preetse (2001), and Jeevaadhi (1996) are some of her major Kannada films. In Telugu films, Khushboo Sundar mainly worked with South Indian actors Venkatesh and Nagarjuna. In May 2010, Khushboo joined the Indian political party DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and left her flourishing career in South Indian cinema. DMK leader Karunanidhi welcomed Khushboo Sundar at his party’s Chennai headquarters.
Khushboo left the DMK on 16 June 2014 and joined the Indian National Congress on 26 November 2014. He was named as the national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress on the day of his joining. On her entry into Congress, Khushboo said,
This is the happiest moment of my life. I feel like I’m home. I am proud to join Congress because it is a secular party. I will work not just for Tamil Nadu, but for the betterment of the country.
Khushboo Sundar left the Indian National Congress on 12 October 2020. Sundar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party the same day. He resigned from the Congress ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2021. In Chennai, he contested from the Thousand Lights constituency. However, Khushboo lost the election to Ezhilan N of DMK party by a margin of 32200 votes. Azilan N won the election with 52.87 percent.

- In 2005, Khushboo courted controversy when she made a public statement that girls could have sex before marriage, but only with protection from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. He further said that after marriage no educated Indian man can expect that his wife will remain a virgin. After this statement of Khushboo Sundar, Dalit Panthers of India demolished the office of South India Film Artist Association. The workers protested against him and demanded his apology. Political party Pattali Makkal Katchi also protested against the statement given while sitting in front of Khushboo’s house. Later, more than 22 complaints were filed against him for “defaming Tamil womanhood and chastity”. The Supreme Court of India dismissed all cases against Khushboo Sundar in 2010.
- In January 2006, Khushboo Sundar filed two complaints against Maxim magazine for featuring a model on the magazine’s cover page wearing a bikini with her head glued to her body. The complaint was filed against the magazine’s editor and four of his colleagues. These were two cases – defamation and indecent portrayal of women. The case remained stalled in the Madras High Court until December 2007 until a petition was filed by any of the accused.
- In December 2012, Khushboo wore a saree which had pictures of Hindu deities Ram, Krishna and Hanuman printed on it. His pictures went viral in the media soon after the incident. An apology was demanded from him by Hindu Makkal Katchi, a political party in Tamil Nadu. Khushboo, replying to Hindu Makkal Katchi, said,
I’m not going to answer to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Why should I? There is no need for this. Why do they care what a woman plays? Don’t they have anything more meaningful to do?”
Later, various cases were filed against him by several political parties including Hindu Munnani and Hindu Makkal Katchi. The complaints said Khushboo Sundar was sitting cross-legged with her slippers on in front of the idols of Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati during a puja in Chennai.
