Kevin Smith Reveals He Underwent PTSD Therapy During Recent Mental Health Treatment

Kevin Smith is candid and honest in a new interview, where he talks openly about his decision to seek help.

The 52 year old man office workers the star and filmmaker spoke with People about seeking help for his mental health after being convinced he was losing his sanity.

During his interview with the outlet, Kevin recalled that it was last January that he took the first step in getting help for an incident that he said was not only “terrifying” but also a “total break in reality.”

“At that time, I would not have been averse to not be around anymore. I called a friend and said, ‘I’m in a strange, dark place. I need to go somewhere and get help,’” he shared.

During his treatment at a health center, Kevin says he focused on childhood traumas, from being sexually abused as a child to being weight-shamed by a fourth-grade teacher.

He says that this educator had made fun of his “gut” in front of his classmates.

“I felt disgusting, like it didn’t matter. That’s when ‘the other guy’ started showing up. I decided to be entertaining and make people love me before they noticed I was fat,” he shared.

Kevin later said that he allowed that to be the first thing he noticed about him in his life: “He was already a self-loathing mess. ‘The other guy’ became my favorite piece of clothing. I would just let him take over.”

She also revealed that she was in group therapy sessions with military veterans who were battling PTSD and worried that her trauma wasn’t the same as theirs.

“At first, it was hard to share when someone was talking about watching their friend get killed and I was like, ‘Well, my fourth grade teacher told me I was fat.’ But I learned that there is no differentiation [between levels of trauma] to the human nervous system. Internally, trauma is trauma.”

Now, Kevin is in a much better place having quit smoking weed and has also cut back on his screen time and hectic work schedule.

“I’m really interested to see if I can finally get comfortable sitting by myself… and just be alone with my thoughts,” he added, before admitting that he’s also “terrified to see everyone’s reaction to [all of this]. But I know there’s someone out there who doesn’t know this, like me, who might get something out of this.”
