Kevin Costner shares new details about his decision to leave yellow stone.
The actor took the stand on Friday (September 1) as part of a child support hearing in Santa Barbara, California, amid his ongoing divorce from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.
While testifying, Kevin revealed what led him to leave the Paramount Network series, explaining that a “long and hard-fought negotiation” over splitting the fifth season into two parts was a major factor in his departure.

People writes that Kevin explained that he needed to focus on his own western, Horizon: An American Sagaand had already changed his schedule to accommodate filming the first part of Yellowstone season 5. “That’s a very important thing in this world,” he noted.
He added that there were “no scripts written” for the second part of season 5 and that they “hadn’t finished” the first half of the season at that point. They opted to do a “pay or play” which didn’t work out and they were expected to pay him $12 million for each part of season 5.
While he wanted to return for season six, Kevin felt he “couldn’t help them anymore.” We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than in previous seasons, there were problems with creativity…”
He shared that before he left the show, he asked his representatives to “ask them to pay me any number, we came up with a number and they [Yellowstone] walked away.” He added that he believes that figure was $12 million.
“I’ve been told it’s a bit disappointing that [it’s] “It is the number one program on television, I will not participate,” he said.
Kevin was then asked if he was going to receive a payment from the second part of yellow stone season 5 and he responded, “I’ll probably go to court for that.”
