Kerry spoke with People about that part of his life and admits that it was difficult for him to include it in “Thicker Than Water” or not.

“At first I wasn’t really sure how I fit into this story of my life. But I started to feel like it was very important for me to share this,” he told the outlet.

She claims she was in her early 20s when the unplanned pregnancy occurred and that she gave a false name to doctors to hide her identity.

“This story had a lot to do with my understanding of myself and the world as my career developed,” she says. “It is very important to me that abortion is not a dirty word and that my abortion is not just another thing on the list of things I am ashamed of.”

Kerry went on to say that it is equally important to address history because “reproductive choices” have been “stripped from us… I am telling my truth about my life, excavating some of my secrets. “I don’t want the fact that I don’t tell it to make anyone think it’s a shame.”

Kerry’s memoir will be available everywhere on September 26.
