A 25-year-old was elected to parliament after the Labour party defeated the Conservatives in Selby and Ainsty, overcoming a 20,000-vote Conservative majority.
In Selby and Ainsty, Labour defeats the Tories, but fails in Uxbridge.
However, Keir Starmer’s party fell short in Boris Johnson’s former constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. The only silver lining in Rishi Sunak’s otherwise gloomy night was the Conservatives’ 495-vote victory in the outer London seat.
Following David Warburton’s resignation due to a controversy, the Liberal Democrats easily won in Somerton and Frome. Sarah Dyke, the South Somerset district council’s cabinet member for the environment, defeated the Conservatives with a margin of 11,008 votes.
In all three byelections, the Green party came in a distant third place. The Selby result, according to Conservative Party Chair Greg Hands, “was driven largely by Conservative voters – previous Conservative voters – staying home,” he claimed.
While the Tories are in “deep electoral trouble” as a result of the overall byelection results, according to polling expert Prof. Sir John Curtice, Labour’s joy was muted by its failure to win Uxbridge.
Labour leaders cited Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, for his decision to expand the ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) pollution programme to outlying districts of the city, including Uxbridge, the focal point of the local Tories’ campaign.
Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of Labour, made a suggestion that Khan should reconsider the approach. She said to BBC Breakfast: “I believe that one of the things we need to think about today is not just the opposition to the Tories, but also the Uxbridge decision that was connected to Ulez.
The Uxbridge outcome demonstrates that you can’t win elections if you don’t pay attention to the voters.

The victory in Somerton and Frome, according to Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, demonstrated that the party was “firmly back in the West Country.”
Keir Mather, a 25-year-old who was named after the original leader of the Labour party, Keir Hardie, and a former researcher for the shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, is now Selby’s representative in parliament. By 4,161 votes, Mather prevailed.
Mather, who is the Commons’ youngest MP, will be known as the “baby of the house.” He claimed that “thousands of votes were in Labour’s box for the first time” in his victory address and remarked, “In this campaign, we have rewritten the rules on where Labour can win.”
“This is a historic outcome that demonstrates that people are looking at Labour and seeing a changed party that is entirely focused on the priorities of working people with an ambitious, doable plan to deliver,” added Starmer.
“Keir Mather will be a fantastic MP and give Selby and Ainsty the fresh start they deserve.” In Uxbridge, where Johnson’s majority had shrunk to 7,210 in the 2019 general election—his first as prime minister—Labour was predicted to win handily.
Party officials requested a recount because there was enough doubt in the Labour side that they had not actually won the byelection. The outcome of the second round was the same: a narrow Conservative triumph.
The local Conservative councillor who will replace Johnson in Westminster, former postman Steve Tuckwell, had stated that the vote was a “referendum” on Ulez.
Tuckwell mentioned the expansion of the zone, where drivers must pay a daily cost of £12.50 if their vehicle does not comply with emission requirements, in his victory speech. “Sadiq Khan has lost Labour this election,” declared Tuckwell.
In Uxbridge and South Ruislip, the vote share went from Conservative to Labour by 6.7 percentage points. To win the seat, Labour required a 7.6-point swing.
Johnson’s unexpected departure, which came after the Commons privileges committee recommended a lengthy ban from the chamber for willfully misinforming the chamber about lockdown parties in Downing Street, served as the catalyst for the byelection.
The Conservatives in Selby ascribed their defeat on outgoing MP Nigel Adams. According to Andrew Jones, the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, who has been in charge of the majority of the Tory campaigning in Selby, people were “really disappointed” that Adams abruptly resigned after learning he wouldn’t be given a seat in the Lords. He said it was “the main talking point” on the door.
After taking Chesham, Amersham, North Shropshire, Tiverton, and Honiton in 2021, as well as Tiverton and Honiton in 2018, the Liberal Democrats have gained four seats from the Conservatives in byelections this year.
Dyke acknowledged lifelong Conservative supporters for originally supporting the Lib Dems in her victory speech in Somerset.
