In January 2017, he and Takeshi Kamura achieved a career-high second place finish in men’s doubles. He received a bronze in 2017 and a silver at the 2018 World Championships.
Additionally, he won silver and three bronze medals in the men’s singles doubles competition at the continental level, while also helping the national team win the 2017 Asian Mixed Team Championship. He competed in the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018. .
In the 2020 Summer Olympics, Sonoda participated. Along with Takeshi Kamura, the pair lost to second-seeded Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the quarterfinals. After competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics, he retired in 2021.
