sippy sidhu murder case
Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu alias Sippy Sidhu was shot dead by an unknown person in a park in Sector 27, Chandigarh on 20 September 2015. According to the police, a .12 bore gun was used in the crime and about four bullets were fired at him. After this, the UT Police registered a case of murder in Sector 26 police station. Sidhu’s family accused Sippy’s ex-girlfriend Kalyani of murder. According to Sidhu’s mother,
We told the police that the judge’s husband and one of his relatives had threatened Sippy, after which I asked her to be alert. In August the judge’s daughter also came to our house and asked Sippy if he would marry her. We suspect that the girl was murdered because she refused to marry him. Police investigation will reveal the real culprit.
In 2016, the case was transferred to the CBI on the request of the Chandigarh administration. Kalyani’s alleged role in the murder case came to light during the initial investigation by CBI. The agency also filed an anonymous report before the court, in which it requested further investigation into Kalyani’s role. In September 2016, the CBI announced a cash reward of Rs. Rs 5 lakh will be given to anyone who gives clues about Sidhu’s killer, helping the agency solve the case. Later, CBI issued an advertisement in a newspaper saying,
There is reason to believe that a woman was also accompanying Sippy’s killer at the time of the murder. The said woman is also being given this opportunity to come forward and contact us if she is innocent. Otherwise it would be deemed that she was a party to the crime.”
In 2021, the agency has increased the reward amount to Rs. Rs 10 lakh and requested the general public to come forward if they have any vital information about the murder. However, the CBI failed to make progress in the case. During the hearing, CBI asked the court to give one month’s time to the agency to file the status report. In June 2022, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its application sought Kalyani’s 10-day remand to interrogate Kalyani to trace other persons involved in the crime and the weapons and vehicles used in the crime. Wants. A CBI spokesperson said,
During further investigation, the alleged involvement of the accused (Kalyani Singh) in the case came to light. Accordingly, he was investigated and arrested.
On the other hand, Kalyani’s lawyers opposed the demand for police remand made by the CBI and called it an abuse of law. They said,
This is a six year old case and the CBI had also filed an untraced report. She (Kalyani) had earlier joined the investigation but nothing objectionable was found against her.
However, Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI Chandigarh, Sukhdev Singh, rejected the plea made by Kalyani’s lawyer and granted four-day remand to Kalyani. Sukhdev Singh said in his judgment,
Although this is an old case and earlier attempts to uncover the actual incidents of the crime were not successful, the CBI still made efforts to collect evidence. Reducing the police remand at this stage will result in failure of the investigation at the initial stage itself.
The court directed Kalyani’s lawyers to remain present during the investigation at the police station without actively participating or interfering in the investigation process. The court allowed Kalyani to use her clothes while in CBI custody, subject to investigation.
