What Became Of Kala?
Kala rose to prominence in 2016 after security forces rescued her from a shipping container in her abductor’s compound. She was dating Charles David Carver, who had recently divorced, at the time. After a few months, they moved in together, and Kala took a cleaning job at Todd Kohlhepp’s house to meet their financial obligations.
Todd also worked as a real estate agent and owned 95 acres of land in rural South Carolina. Similarly, Todd hired Kala and Charles to do landscaping work on his farm on August 31, 2016. And when they arrived at work, he told them to wait outside.
Todd emerged a few minutes later, armed with a gun, and fired three shots into Charles’ chest, killing him on the spot. Todd then chained Kala’s neck, feet, and hands and imprisoned her in a metal shipping container within his compound after her boyfriend was killed. Furthermore, Todd killed Charles, according to Kala, in order to have her all to himself.
Furthermore, during her tense stay in the container, her captor removed the chains that bound her and forced her to please him sexually however he desired every day between 1 and 3 p.m. All of this occurred as he pointed a gun at her, claiming she was only alive to serve his needs.
Brown and Todd’s relationship deteriorated from an employer-employee union to an abusive relationship. Similarly, she revealed to Dr. Phil that Todd hoped she would develop Stockholm syndrome, an emotional coping mechanism for abuse victims who bond with or feel in love with their perpetrators.
How Long Had Kala Brown Been Gone?
Kohlhepp had Kala imprisoned for over two months. Charles’ mother reported her son missing after sensing something was wrong when he did not communicate, which was unusual. Brown’s friend and mother were also attempting to contact her but were unsuccessful.
Her mother reported to the police that she discovered her daughter’s dog without food or water in their apartment, which was unusual. In addition, in early September, she reported Kala missing. Soon after, his friends began to notice strange posts on Charles’s Facebook page, claiming that he and Kala had married and purchased a home.
Then the investigation began, and the IP address was traced back to Todd’s home. Furthermore, on November 3, 2016, the premises were invaded by local authorities. When they arrived, they heard distant noises coming from the container and discovered Kala chained by her assailant. Todd is now serving seven consecutive life sentences.
What Happened To Kala?
In 2018, the court awarded Kala $6.3 million in compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental and emotional anguish, and loss of enjoyment of life. Furthermore, it was discovered after Kala’s story that she was not the only victim of Todd’s violent atrocities. As a result, Todd admitted to killing seven other people.
Kala’s exact location is unknown to the public. However, she was thrust back into the spotlight in 2019 when her fiance, Adam Mayson, committed suicide. Later that year, Kala and her boyfriend, James Moore, were charged with third-degree criminal domestic violence. Kala has since moved on to a new relationship and is said to have a daughter.
Furthermore, the tragic story of what happened to Kala brought to light other crimes against humanity. Furthermore, it turns out that Charles and Kala were not Todd’s only victims. Todd, then 15, kidnapped a 14-year-old girl in Arizona in 1987 and bound, strangled, and raped her at gunpoint. Then he followed the girl home, threatening to kill her and her entire family if she reported the crime.
Despite his threats, the young girl bravely came forward. He was also found guilty of kidnapping. Todd received a 15-year prison sentence and was ordered to register as a sex offender. This character was released in 2001 and relocated to South Carolina. In exchange for a meeting with his mother, he confessed to six more murders. As a result, he even detailed where the victims were shot, which had previously been kept secret from the public.
