Kaikala Satyanarayana (1935-2022) was a veteran Indian actor, film producer, and politician, who mainly worked in the Telugu film industry. He served as a Member of Parliament from the Machilipatnam constituency in the eleventh Lok Sabha. Regarded as one of the most prolific actors in Telugu cinema, Kaikala Satyanarayana appeared in more than 750 films in his career spanning over 6 decades. On 23 December 2022, Kaikala Satyanarayana died at his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad, Telangana, due to health-related issues.

Kaikala Satyanarayana was born on Thursday, 25 July 1935 (age 87 years; at the time of death) in Kavutaram, Krishna district, Madras Presidency, British India (now Andhra Pradesh, India). His zodiac sign is Leo. He received his primary education in Gudlavalleru and intermediate education in Vijayawada. Kaikala pursued his graduation at Gudivada College, Andhra Pradesh. Inclined towards acting from a young age, Kaikala Satyanarayana gave several acting performances in his college days.

Kaikala Satyanarayana is the son of Kaikala Laxmi Narayana. Not much is known about his mother. He has a brother, Kaikala Nageswara Rao, who is a film producer.

Kaikala Satyanarayana got married to Nageswaramma Satyanarayana on 10 April 1960. He had two daughters and two sons. One of his sons’ names is KS Rama Rao and one of his daughters’ names is Kaikala Rama Devi.

Actor
Kaikala Satyanarayana was spotted by the film producer DL Narayana who offered him a role in the Telugu film Supayi Koothuru in 1959; the film marked Kaikala’s acting debut. Although the film did not perform well at the box office, Kaikala was noticed for his uncanny resemblance to NTR in terms of height and physique. In 1960, NT Rama Rao offered Kaikala the role of a prince in the Telugu film Sahasra Siracheda Apoorva Chinthamani. Later, Satyanarayana played a dupe for NT Rama Rao in various Telugu films. Kaikala made his Kannada film debut in 1963 with the film Swarna Gowri in which he played the role of Lord Parameshwara. Subsequently, he appeared in the Telugu films Sri Krishnarjuna Yudham (1963), Pandava Vanavasam (1965), Paramanandayya Sishyula Katha (1967) and Bhale Rangadu (1969).
His Hindi film debut came in the year 1977 with the film Shri Ram Vanvas. Some of his Hindi films include Karma (1986) and Ghayal Sherni (1988). In 2002, he made his Tamil film debut with the film Panchatanthiram in which he played the role of Reddy. He was first offered a negative role in the Telugu film Kanaka Durga Pooja Mahima. He played the role with such perfection that he was flooded with offers to play negative roles in various films. In his six-decade film career, Kaikala appeared in many superhit films which include Narthanasala (1963), Yamagola (1975), Adavi Ramudu (1977), Daana Veera Soora Karna (1977), Kondaveeti Simham (1981), Subhalekha (1982), Bobbili Brahmanna (1984), Nari Nari Naduma Murari (1990), Gang Leader (1991), President Gari Pellam (1992), and Murari (2001).
He was last seen in the Telugu film Maharshi (2019) in which he played the role of Pooja’s paternal grandfather. The film starred Mahesh Babu in the lead role.

Kaikala Satyanarayana owned a film production company named Rama Films Productions under which he produced films like Kodama Simham (1990), Bangaru Kutumbam (1994), and Muddula Mogudu (1997).
Politician
Kaikala Satyanarayana had a brief stint in politics. He joined the Telugu Desam Party in the early nineties. However, he did not contest any elections for a long time. In 1996, Kaikala contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Machilipatnam constituency on the recommendation of Chandrababu Naidu. He won the elections, becoming a Member of Parliament from the Machilipatnam constituency in the eleventh Lok Sabha. Satyanarayana quit politics after losing the 1998 Lok Sabha elections.

Death
Kaikala Satyanarayana passed away on 23 December 2022 at around 4 am at his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad, Telangana, after a brief illness. His mortal remains were kept for display at his residence on 23 December. According to Kaikala’s family, his last rites will be performed at Mahaprasthanam crematorium in Jubilee Hills on 24 December 2022. Extremely saddened by the passing away of Kaikala Satyanarayana, many Telugu actors took to social media to express their grief. Calling Kaikala his ‘favourite actor,’ the South Indian actor Nani tweeted,
Kaikala Satyanarayana gaaru…One of my favorite actors from the golden era of Telugu cinema. Mana intlo Manishi la anipistharu. Legendary body of work. Condolences to the family.”
In October 2021, he was admitted to a hospital after a fall at his residence. In November 2021, he was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad after complaining of breathlessness. His condition was said to be critical and he was kept on respiratory support. There were also rumours that suggested that Kaikala Satyanarayana had passed away. Denouncing the rumours about Kaikala’s death, Rama Devi (Kaikala Satyanarayana’s daughter) stated that her father was recovering. She also requested the media not to show false news. Rama Devi said,
My father is responding to treatment. He is recovering steadily. He has started interacting with us. Yesterday, he gave a thumbs-up to the doctor, Madala Ravi garu. Nobody needs to be worried. TV channels should stop showing bad news.”

- He was a close follower of the legendary actor and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh NT Rama Rao.
- Apparently, the popular south Indian actor Chiranjeevi visited Kaikala’s house every year on the occasion of Kaikala’s birthday.
