The disgraced former detective stood outside the family’s Fresh Meadows home and declared, “I have nothing in my heart but love for New York and everyone involved in my case, especially Mr. Louima.”

Volpe, 51, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for groping Louima, then 30, in an NYPD station with a broken broom.
Louima, a Haitian immigrant at the time, was handcuffed and had to undergo multiple surgeries after his rectum and bladder ruptured in the horrific attack, which Volpe mistakenly believed he had punched in a street brawl in Brooklyn.
Volpe quickly became the face of police brutality in the wake of the horrific incident, which sent shockwaves across the country.
Release
The brutal attack was called “one of the most heinous crimes in New York history” by the US attorney’s office in Brooklyn when Volpe demanded humanitarian release after he contracted COVID-19 while detention was protested two years ago. The request was ultimately denied by the judge. However, sources say the Federal Bureau of Prisons has just released Volpe under the First Step Act, which allows some federal inmates to be released early to reduce the prison population.
“Let’s continue to send the message to police officers around this country that if you do what he did, you’ll be in jail for a very long time,” said New York attorney Sanford Rubenstein, who is representing Louima. “While I believe [Volpe] should have served the full sentence.
