News Julian Leeser
Liberal MP Julian Leeser has defended the party’s strength after deciding to leave the front row in favor of Indigenous Voices supporting the referendum before Parliament.
The former shadow attorney general and spokesperson for Indigenous Australians claims he still supports the party and leader Peter Dutton, but disagrees with him on the Voice vote during an appearance on the morning Today show now. He will move to the back bench while he is still a member of the group.
He told Today’s Sarah Abo: “The Liberal Party is not chaotic, I support Peter Dutton’s leadership, I love the party, we just have different views on the subject.
“I’ve been a Glas advocate for a long time, I’ve been there since the very beginning and before I became a member of parliament, I set up an organization to encourage people to support Glas.” Since you have to stand up for something, even if it costs you, I feel I have to resign and take a different stance for personal moral and ethical reasons.
Following Dutton’s announcement last week that the Liberals would oppose Glas, the decision was made. Instead, they will campaign in the First Nations community for local and regional organizations. Leeser says that while he supports Glas, he wants to change the model of government.
I believe the government model is wrong, so I will spend the next six weeks campaigning for a better model. In my opinion, this could be helpful for Indigenous Australians.
Leeser was the third member of the Confederacy who had just left for Glas. After Dutton announced his Voice policy, former Indigenous Australians minister, Ken Wyatt, left the Liberal Party. Meanwhile MP Andrew Gee has left the Country and will now serve as an independent MP.
The Nationalists, a minor coalition partner of the Liberal Party, had previously opposed Glas. Lesser will push for changes to Voices from the Bench, including adopting local and regional policies, and allowing government to change Voices over time. “Politics is complicated, but I stand up for morality,” he declared. I can continue to be a member of the Liberal Party, loyal to Peter Dutton’s leadership and be able to run this particular issue, and that’s a strength.
