Jujutsu Kaisen: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Megumi Fushiguro

Megumi Fushiguro is one of the more reserved protagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen. The nonchalant way he carries himself and his powerful Shikigami make him a fan favorite. Yet his little-known backstory and personality quirks will allow fans to appreciate him on a new level.

Throughout season 1 and the manga, fans witness Megumi’s work under the strongest sorcerer, Gojo Satoru, as they set Megumi up to be one of the most powerful upcoming Jujutsu Sorcerers. But what goes on in Megumi’s head when he’s not training? And does he enjoy anything other than trying to protect people he believes are kind?

He Reads Nonfiction

According to the Official Fanbook and the first volume of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Megumi enjoys reading nonfiction books. While it appears in his character profile in the manga, a large portion of the fanbase either skips those or is not privy to the manga.

One of Megumi’s comforts is clothes worn around the house, like large shirts and sweatpants, and he’s seen eating pizza in his bed with Yuji and Nobara at one point. It makes sense, then, that his hobby is a more relaxed, mentally intriguing activity. Seeing as he is one of the more intelligent Jujutsu Kaisen characters, he finds that nonfiction books are likely more trustworthy for gaining knowledge.

He’s Very Important To The Zen’in Clan

Many fans know Megumi is a disjoined member of the Zen’in Clan and that he doesn’t really care about what they do or if he is involved in their decisions. Yet many viewers are likely unaware that they were in such hot pursuit of Megumi because he inherited the Ten Shadows technique, unlike his aunts Maki & Mai Zen’in.

It’s not only that he inherited such a powerful technique but that, as a second-grade sorcerer, he has already developed the first steps of his domain, Chimera Shadow Garden. It’s the one place he was able to summon the most powerful Shikigami, Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga. He is invaluable to the clan, even with those who would rather step in to take charge, and he doesn’t see it as something he needs to do.

He’s Particular About Food

Megumi dislikes red bell peppers, a mildly sweet vegetable. He likes food that pairs well with ginger, like chicken. The baseball episode even specifies that he prefers breast meat in chicken Nanban and thigh meat in Oyakodon.

The only time fans really see Megumi eating is when he, Nobara, and Yuji eat pizza in his room, and he complains that it’s hard to digest. In a Juju Stroll, all of the students are asked if they prefer rice or bread, and Megumi doesn’t hesitate to say rice. There’s no explicit explanation about why Megumi is so particular about his food, but it fits his character well to know exactly what he prefers, and it seems to come up often in post-credit Juju Strolls.

He Cares Deeply

From the moment fans meet Megumi, they can assume he knows his role as a Jujutsu Sorceror and wants to fulfill it, because he follows Gojo’s orders even when he is annoyed, and he plans to fight even if his adversary scares him. He voluntarily stands out in the Jujutsu community because of his beliefs and even says, “I have faith in my own sense of morality.”

In the manga, when the first- and second-years are discussing the Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event, Yuji can offer only his hand-to-hand combat as an option for the battle. While Panda doubts him, Megumi speaks up and says, “If it came down to a brawl with no cursed energy involved, Itadori would win.” It’s a small moment, but for someone like Megumi, who doesn’t speak up unless it’s absolutely necessary, it proves he is happy that Yuji is alive and has Megumi’s vote of confidence. Moments like this are spread throughout the anime and the manga, and if fans look closely enough, they’ll catch his small smiles.

He’s A Capricorn

Megumi Fushiguro's sun sign is Capricorn

Megumi Fushiguro was born on Dec. 22, making him a Capricorn. No one ever truly fulfills every stereotype of their main zodiac sign, also known as their sun sign. Megumi, however, meets almost all of the criteria of a stereotypical Capricorn.

Capricorns are said to be loyal, hardworking, and stoic. Megumi is practical, loyal, and definitely stoic as well. These traits are apparent from the moment he met Gojo Satoru, when he was only a first-grader and was uninterested in the things Gojo told him about his family and his future. His attitude and behavior as he grows are one of the reasons he’s a Jujutsu Kaisen fan favorite. He gets the job done, loves his friends, and maintains an air of mystery.

He Impresses With A Kanji Celebrity Quiz

Flashback to when Megumi meets Gojo

While Megumi doesn’t share much about his personal life, as Nobara has pointed out, he seems to know quite a bit about what goes on in the world around him even when it doesn’t involved curses. In a Jujutsu Stroll at the end of the manga, Gojo gave Nobara, Yuji, and Megumi a Kanji celebrity quiz.

Megumi loses to Yuji, and that’s no surprise since Yuji loves movies, but Megumi still beats Nobara. She even makes a comment beforehand that he shouldn’t show off. Whether it’s a testament to his Kanji knowledge or his celebrity knowledge, fans won’t know. Either way, it’s proof that he knows more than just sorcery.

He Has Unexpected Creator-Assigned Theme Songs

The creator, Gege Akutami, wanted to step away from character profile pages and instead created a list of theme songs for each Jujutsu Kaisen character. Megumi’s theme songs are Uchujin’s “Hakujitsumu” and Weezer’s “Island in the Sun.”

“Hakujitsumu” progressively builds and has an overall sound that feels like internal growth. “Island In The Sun” invites fans to believe that Megumi imagines a time when he can just enjoy things at his own pace. They’re both unexpected but welcome themes assigned to the character.

His Laugh During The Finger Bearer Fight Is His First

There are times when Megumi smiles shyly in shared joy with Yuji and Nobara. In other moments, he demonstrates that he knows how much his friends care for him. Still, he doesn’t laugh along with them. In fact, he never laughs out loud before the Death Painting arc toward the end of the first season.

When Megumi fights the Yasohachi Bridge Finger Bearer curse, he suffers a severe blow to the head and realizes it is more powerful than he anticipated. Megumi expands his domain, Chimera Shadow Garden, and lets out a deranged laugh. Most fans are hopeful for a laugh based on joy in the future, but this laugh truly brought out Megumi’s realization that he doesn’t have to sacrifice himself simply because the enemy is powerful.

His Name Has Special Meaning

Megumi is traditionally a more feminine Japanese name. It translates roughly to “blessing” or “grace.” While Megumi constantly thinks he isn’t special or he’s just at Tokyo Jujutsu High to fulfill a role, he was given this name under the anticipation that one day he could save a lot of people and be a powerful Jujutsu Sorcerer.

Megumi’s “strange disposition,” as he calls it, doesn’t necessarily exude the meaning behind his name, but those in his life would agree that he is a blessing. Even though he prefers to be referred to as Fushiguro, his given first name is still strong because he himself is strong.

Close Combat Skills

It’s brought up ofyen throughout the anime that Megumi is impressive in close-quarters combat even though he is a Shikigami user, and they usually attack from a distance. He didn’t reach these abilities with just raw talent.

Outside of his training with Gojo, he trained with Maki and her cursed weapons. This is evident from her guidance when they worked in tandem with the jet-black sword and three-sectioned Playful Cloud weapon while fighting Hanami during the Kyoto event.
