Jeff and Liane Sargent, both of whom played collegiate soccer, raised Sargent in O’Fallon, Missouri. Josh joined the Scott Gallagher Soccer Club when he was eight years old. He spent part of his high school years at St. Dominic before relocating to Florida to join the U.S. residency program. He was recognized as the country’s No. 2 high school soccer player.
