Josh began by noticing the similarities between his character in Once upon a time and his character in Manifest.
“I really started to lean in and think, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m in the truman show? Is this some kind of distorted sequel to Prince Charming?’” he joked. “There were definitely some overlapping ideas and themes, which I fully embraced because they’re great ideas and they’re great themes. I totally accepted it. Oncers and Manifesters became one.”
He went on to say that his time in Once upon a time prepared him for his role in Manifest.
“Both shows are big ideas based on something very real, and that is family. Being on a show like Once Upon a Time for that long, somehow prepared for that kind of storytelling. It’s something I really love because I think when it comes to fantasy, sci-fi, whatever you want to call it, you can convey ideas in ways that you can’t in other genres,” Josh explained. .
He added: “I really love that and I love the kind of audience that those kinds of shows draw because the fans of these shows are incredible. They are so involved, they are so smart and they are so committed that it makes it all worth it.”
Once upon a time it’s still finding new fans since it was added to Disney+, which Josh called “super humbling.”
“It’s still finding an audience,” he shared. “People come up to me all the time about Once and say they just started watching it and they love it. Or I’ve had people come up to me, which makes me feel old, but that’s okay, they say, ‘You were my childhood. You got me through college, all through high school’ and that show changed her life and is humbling. It’s nothing but gratitude to be a part of a show that was such an important part of the fabric of some people’s lives.”
He added that he and his wife Ginnifer Goodwin, who starred in Once Upon a Time with him, were currently trying to get their children to watch the series.
“We keep trying to push Once upon a time down our guys’ throats and they just don’t want to see it,” he told the outlet. I think it’s probably a healthy reaction to worry less about mom and dad on screen. But we’ve tried, we’ve tried. several times so you can see Once upon a time because they are at the right age and I think they would really enjoy it. But they’re just not interested at all.”
Once upon a time is currently streaming on Disney+, while Manifest is streaming on Netflix. Josh was recently seen meeting with his Manifest co-stars and you can see all the photos here.
