Jon Hamm & Tina Fey’s New Movie ‘Maggie Moore(s)’ Upsets Families It Is Loosely Based On

Maggie Moore(s) has the real life families behind the tragedies upset.

Starring Jon Hamm and Tina Fey, the movie is described as a “black comedy” where the police chief starts to unravel a web of small-town lies while investigating the bizarre murders of two women with the same name.

The movie is loosely based off the real life murders of Mary Lou Morris and Mary McGinnis Morris, and their daughters weren’t too happy about the movie.

Marilyn Blalock and Katharyn Morris, who are the daughters of the Marys, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about being unsettled over the movie, and revealed they didn’t know anything about the movie ahead of the trailer, which was released, of all days, on Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day is a really hard time anyway,” Marilyn shared with the outlet. “That it was bad timing is an understatement. It’s very distasteful because we’re still living with this. These women are staples in our lives. That was my mother.”

She then added that she was shocked at watching the trailer at first.

“I found it absolutely unbelievable. Because this is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me — and then to figure out that it was being done in a comedic format was really hurtful. To know that people are going to be laughing about it is a sickening feeling.”

Following that, Katharyn did confirm that there was a conference call between the filmmakers, herself and Marilyn about bringing a new light to their mothers’ murders, which are still unsolved.

“While I can’t say that all of my fears were put to rest, I am hopeful that, with their assistance, the real cases that inspired the movie will get the attention they deserve,” she said.

Marilyn added that this isn’t the first time their mothers’ murders have been a focus, but “to hear someone talk about it is one thing, to see the things played out on a big screen is another. To know that the most tragic event in my life is going to be something that people laugh about is gut-wrenching to me.”

In a response to the families, filmmakers did release a statement about the subject matter.

“While our story is a fictional one, it is inspired in part by a real crime that occurred in October 2000. Two women, both by the name of Mary Morris, were murdered within 72 hours of one another in Houston, Texas,” the shared with EW. “These murders remain unsolved. The filmmakers have been in contact with the families of the victims and we join them in asking anyone who believes they have information that might shed light on this case to please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Homicide Detective, Jeff Thomas (Jeff.Thomas@hctx.net). They can also call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.”

Earlier this year, another family spoke out about their own tragedy being featured in a Netflix series. Here’s what happened…
