Right after finishing as runner-up in season 10 of The Masked Singer, Dukes of Hazzard Star John Schneider opened up about how the show helped him after the death of his wife, Alicia Allain.
while talking to PEOPLE about your The masked singer opportunity, Schneider mulled joining the show months after Allair died of breast cancer. “What an incredible opportunity to be able to honor Alicia,” she said of The masked singer. “Being able to honor people who are grieving, maybe educate people who are grieving a little bit, in front of millions of people.”
Although he describes himself as a “pretty strong guy,” John Schneider stated that he is also a very emotional guy. “Being on that stage dressed as a donut, singing some of the greatest songs ever written, and having people respond to the songs and the performance without any notion that it was me, really helped John Schneider.”
Schneider noted that wearing the donut costume helped him get through the worst year of his life. “I’m glad I did it.”
The actor further explained that his wife had tried to convince him to do The masked singer for a moment. “I was hoping that one day Alicia would be there to help… So when that opportunity came, I just had to look up at the sky and laugh.”
He then said his wife was there for him when the show asked him to be a donut. He reminded her how Allair would go to the local donut shop every Saturday to buy her a bag of apple fritters. “Then again they said, ‘Donut,’ and I just had to look up at the sky and say, ‘Well, of course. This is you. It has to be you.’”

“Grief is something you have to do,” Schneider explained. “And I liked that Donut’s grief is actually helping people who are on the same path. It’s not a job I ever wanted. It’s nothing I really want to understand.”
When asked how the experience helped him during his grieving process, John Schneider said he was able to stand in front of others and cry openly. “What a wonderful opportunity to honor Alicia,” he continued. “Being able to honor people who are grieving, maybe educate people who are grieving a little bit, in front of millions of people? “My God, what a platform.”
