Pelletier reported on Saturday, August 12, that only 3% of the whole search area had been covered by authorized cadaver dogs. He went on to say that, despite the fact that there have already been 96 fatalities, “none of us really know the size of it (the wildfire) yet.” He continued: John was chosen to succeed Tivoli Faaumu as the police chief of Maui County back in November 2021.
John Pelletier has previously spent more than 20 years working for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The first person from outside of Hawaii to hold the position of chief of police was John Pelletier, a native of Buffalo, New York. According to Hawaii News Now, his appointment was undertaken in an effort to encourage transparency and accountability within the force. His job duties are fully mentioned on LinkedIn:
“Overseas public safety and police operations for 165,000 residents and 3 million tourists annually.”
According to Hawaii News Now, Pelletier is a third-generation police officer who works in Wailuku, Hawaii. According to his LinkedIn profile, John attended FBINA 276 and the University of Nevada–Las Vegas before completing the FBI National Academy.
During his interview with commission head Frank De Rego, he acknowledged managing SWAT and K-9 teams, working as a detective sergeant in the gang department, taking part in internal affairs, and instructing at the police academy. Additionally, he was in charge of the Las Vegas Strip during the spate of shootings that occurred there in 2017.
When asked why he would be a suitable fit, John Pelletier replied, “My experience working with the Las Vegas PD will help me head the department at one of the largest tourist destinations in the world.” He desired to, in his words, “reboot the entire department.”
He made it a priority to deal with the many issues brought on by racial, ethnic, and cultural considerations during his tenure in order to ensure that everyone in Hawaii feels “they have equal protection under the law.”
“Our diversity is our strength, make no mistake about that.” he remarked
What was John Pelletier’s opinion of their efforts to find and identify the deceased?
The disaster devastated almost the whole town of Lahaina, leaving only ashes in its wake. The governor, Josh Green, said that a minimum of 2,200 structures sustained damage or were totally destroyed, costing an estimated $6 billion.
Pelletier noted that it is challenging to identify the deceased since whatever remains they pick up degrade. So yet, just two people have been identified. When a home’s ruins are first scoped, they are marked with a “X” in a vivid orange color and, if any human remains are found, with a “HR.” Additionally used in the procedure are cadaver dogs.

John Pelletier also suggested that those who had lost loved ones submit a DNA test in order to “identify loved ones.” The deceased’s identity is still being sought by authorities.
