John Mulaney is opening up about why he said no to taking over hosting duties on the daily program.
The 40-year-old comedian was invited to the Essential! podcast, where he shared how he was contacted about the concert before Trevor Noah was booked into the venue and why he turned it down.

John remembered that it was just around the corner. snl 40th Anniversary when it all happened.
“I had a sitcom on Fox. They had aired all 13 [episodes], but it was cancelled,” he shared. “It didn’t do good numbers, but at least the critics vilified it. So it was a fun time.”
Following the end of mulaneyJohn explains that he was approached by Kent Alterman, who was the then president of Comedy Central, who asked if he was interested in the show and took over the hosting desk vacated by Jon Stewart.
“I was extremely flattered to be asked about it. I felt like they would be big shoes to fill,” he recalled, before adding that “I was ashamed to put myself out there in the moment after the Fox run. And I felt like all eyes would be on whoever came after Mr. Stewart.”
Although John admitted that it was a tempting offer, he ultimately decided against it.
“It wasn’t the right thing to do at the time, but I remember saying to Kent, ‘I wish it was five years from now.’ And he said, ‘Yes, but it’s not.’ I mean, I just remember Kent having a big ‘I hear you’. I’m here to listen to anything you have to say, but it’s now, and we’re asking you about it, and hypothetically we can’t talk for that long at this dinner, John,’” he said.
Trevor recently stepped away from the desk in late 2022, and a host of guest hosts have since taken over.
