John Mulaney is opening up about his intervention.
In late 2020, it was revealed that the 40-year-old comedian entered rehab for alcohol and cocaine addiction. In February 2021, John completed treatment and has been sober ever since.
In his new Netflix comedy special John Mulaney: Baby JJohn admitted to using a lot of cocaine before a group of 12 friends from the comedy community got together in person in New York City and on Zoom under the guise of “dining with a friend from college” to stage an intervention. . .
Many of those friends included some very famous comedians.
“Let me say this now, I don’t want to be weird. It was a star-studded intervention. It was like a good group,” John said in the Netflix special. “It was a good group. As angry as I was when I walked in there, I was like, this is a good lineup, it’s really flattering in itself.”
“It was like a ‘We Are the World’ of alternative comedians over 40. All comedians. No one said anything funny the whole night though,” John added jokingly.
“I was getting psychotic. I’m sitting in a horrible chair, crashing from cocaine,” John recalled. “Nobody lets me go to the bathroom to freshen up and the funniest people stare at me, refusing to make jokes. It was maddening.
He continued: “I was so angry that night. They had tricked me. I mean, in essence, an intervention is a joke. They had played a joke on me. They were trying to tell me what to do with my life, they were trying to control me. They sent me to rehab for months. I felt powerless. I felt very angry.”
Looking back now, John is thankful for all the friends who helped him get sober.
“To be able to do this show and be here, listen, I’m grateful to everyone for my intervention,” John said. They intervened. They confronted me and completely saved my life.”
We have now compiled a list of the stars who attended John’s speech.
