As he reflects on his time on the hit television series. Community, Joel McHale remembers having an “altercation” with co-star Chevy Chase while on set.
During his appearance on Michael Rosebaum Inside you On the podcast, McHale was asked if there were any physical or verbal incidents with Chase while he was on the set of the show.
“It would be a little controversial,” Joel McHale explained. “It got to a point where I was like, ‘Okay…’ One time I got in trouble because I hurt him. “I dislocated his shoulder.”
McHale also recalled that there were “several occasions” where a physical altercation between him and Chase would involve pushing or shoving. “It was advanced clowning,” he declared. “You know, antics, and then she always turned into sex. It was not funny”.
Joel McHale previously was open about his on-set issues with Chase. In his 2016 memoirs Thank you for the money, McHale gave a “step by step” on how to “fight Chevy Chase.” McHale said Chase never contacted him about that section of his book.
When Rosenbaum asked if Chase knew he was an “asshole,” Joel McHale noted that he “would think so.”
Community It ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2016. The show starred McHale and Chase, as well as Ken Jeong, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, and Danny Pudi.

During an appearance at WTF podcast in 2023, Chevy Chase stated that he did not believe Community It was enough.
“I felt a little limited,” Chase explained at the time. “Everyone had their parts and stuff. I thought they were all good, but it wasn’t strong enough for me.”
In his recent podcast appearance, Joel McHale shared his response to Chase’s comment about 2023. “My response to that was, ‘Well, yeah, the feeling is mutual about your attitude and you didn’t have to be there,’” he noted. “He says, ‘I didn’t want to be at the table with those people.’ And as Gillian would say: ‘[The] The feeling is mutual. This was not a prison sentence. “We were not recruited for a war.”
McHale then added: “They paid you a lot of money and you got free food all day, so you could walk away.”
Chase was fired from the show before its sixth and final season. He allegedly used a racist slur toward Donald Glover during filming. He also had a falling out with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon.
Glover, who appeared on the show as Troy, claimed that Chase used the N-word while ranting about his issues with the character. Chase did not deny using the slur during an interview with the Washington Post years later.
“I could have said it,” Chase declared. However, he also noted that he had been a Glover fan the entire time they worked together on Community.
