The film, set in the 1980s, promises to be a strong female story. It was written by Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson, The Essex Serpent).

Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe) directs Joan, while Paul Frift (Good Omens) produces. Ruth Kenley-Letts, Jenny Van Der Lande and Neil Blair are executive producers. Snowed-In Productions (Stonehouse, The Midwich Cuckoos) is behind the show.
