Jo Jorgensen began her career working with computer systems at IBM before leaving to become co-owner and president of Digitech, Inc. Additionally, in 2002, she was awarded a Ph.D. by Clemson University. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
Additionally, she has been a full-time professor at Clemson since 2006. Jorgensen first ran for office in the 1992 election for the United States House of Representatives. She ran as a Libertarian against incumbent Democrat Liz J.
Patterson and Republican challenger Bob Inglis for the SC-04 seat in northwest South Carolina. Jorgensen finished third with 2.2% of the vote. Additionally, the Libertarian Party nominated Jorgensen for vice president as Harry Browne’s running mate before the 1996 United States presidential election.
She was elected with 92% of the votes on the first ballot. On October 22 she participated in a nationally televised vice presidential debate on C-SPAN, alongside Herbert Titus of the Taxpayers Party and Mike Tompkins of the Natural Law Party.

Jorgensen filed with the FEC on August 13, 2019 to run for the Libertarian presidential nomination in the 2020 election. He formally launched his campaign at the South Carolina Libertarian Party convention on November 2, 2019, before participating in the South Carolina Libertarian presidential debate the next day.
Jorgensen became the Libertarian presidential candidate on May 23, 2020, making her the first woman to do so and the only 2020 presidential candidate with access to more than 270 electoral votes.
