University years
McLaughlin played for Union Youth Development affiliate FC Delco for three seasons. He led the club with 16 goals in 24 appearances in 2010-2011. Additionally, he committed to Colgate University after his time at Delco.
He was one of six players, and the only freshman, to start all 22 games for Colgate during the 2011 season. Additionally, he scored in his first collegiate start against Syracuse University on August 27, 2011.

Philadelphia Union
Jimmy McLaughlin joined the Philadelphia Union as the club’s second homegrown player on December 12, 2011.
On May 29, 2012, he made his professional debut as a substitute for Freddy Adu in a 3–0 victory over the Rochester Rhinos in the third round of the 2012 US Open Cup. On October 24, 2012, he made his MLS debut. , replacing Danny Cruz in the 73rd minute of the 1-2 loss against Sporting Kansas City.
Harrisburg City Islanders
He had previously been loaned to the Philadelphia Union’s third-tier affiliate, the Harrisburg City Islanders. McLaughlin had been loaned out on rare occasions by the affiliation until the 2014 season, when he was sent out on a season-long loan.

FC Cincinnati played Chicago Fire SC in the round of 16 of the 2017 US Open Cup on June 28. McLaughlin scored one of three goals in the penalty shootout that followed 120 minutes of scoreless play.
He was one of nine FC Cincinnati players to return for the 2018 season after Koch rebuilt the team during the offseason. Although McLaughlin came into the team, he began to get fewer starts and was used more often as a late-game substitute.
