Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers remember how they came to host the night game.
The two hosts, who are the current faces of tonight’s show and Late at nightopened in the Strike Force Five podcast about how they weren’t actually even considered for hosting jobs until Lorne Michaels intervened.

jimmy was gone Saturday night live in 2004 to pursue a bigger career in film, but said Lorne approached him about taking over Late at night a few years after Conan O’Brien, when he was heading to tonight’s show At that time. (There was some drama involved!)
“He [Michaels] says, ‘Would you ever want to do a talk show?’” Jimmy shared. “I say, ‘I don’t believe it.’ … In six years, ask me, and if I’m around I’ll think about it.’”
As promised, Lorne stuck with him and Jimmy’s wife was the one who completely convinced him.
“’You have to take this job. You’re one of three human beings who’s ever done this,’” he recalled her telling him. “So I call Lorne and say, ‘I’m in. I would love to do it'”.
But that’s when he discovered that “’NBC doesn’t really want you. But we have to talk to them.’ By the way, I’m not even on your list.”
Jimmy went on to say that Lorne really encouraged him to get the job: “’Either you do this with Jimmy or I’m not involved,’ or something like that. He changed my life. “
It was much the same for Seth, who was also not on NBC’s roster, aside from a New York Post story that hinted that he could be on a list for it. Lorne noticed.
“When you talk to Lorne, it often feels like a follow-up call to a conversation that never happened,” Seth shared. “He literally started saying, ‘You know, I think you’re going to do it, and it’s going to be good and it’s going to take time, but you’re going to have Jimmy as the lead.’ Again there was no moment where someone said to me: would you like to do this?
After his career as Late at night host, Jimmy took over tonight’s show in 2014. Then Seth took over Late at night same year.
