Early in the 1980s, Balsillie started working as a chartered accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, which is now PwC. Rick Brock, the proprietor of the tiny tech business Sutherland-Schultz in Cambridge, Ontario, was someone he met while he was a student. Balsillie returned to Canada after earning his degree in 1989 and joined Sutherland-Schultz, where he eventually rose to the position of executive vice president.
Later, when this corporation was bought out by another in 1992, he was forced out. Brock proposed that he use his severance to invest in Research in Motion, a small business that had once been a supplier to Sutherland-Schultz, during the takeover negotiations.
