Jessica Watkins’ career

Watkins joined Stanford’s football team in her freshman year and played for them for four years. She was a member of the 2008 Division I state championship team, her sophomore year. Watkins was named to the All-American First Team in college football in 2008 and 2010. She played for the USA Eagles in their third place at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens and is a former member of the Team. United States women’s national team. Watkins assisted in testing the Mars Phoenix lander and prototype drill while an undergraduate student at the Ames Research Center. Watkins served on the science operations team for the same mission in 2011.

She’s part of the science team for the similar Desert Research and Technology Research mission, and a planner for the Mars 2020 rover and the Mars sample return mission. She was involved in the day-to-day planning of Mars rover operations as a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech and a member of the Mars Science Laboratory science team. It uses imaging data from the Mars rover combined with orbital data to investigate the stratigraphy, geology and geomorphology of Mars.

Watkins was selected to join NASA’s Astronaut Group 22 in June 2017 and began two years of training in August.
