Parker, Tashara: Talk about your hair history. When it comes to your hair, levels, exfoliation, any level for me?
Jessica Washington: There’s no doubt. So there was a particular time in my life where I didn’t believe I would be able to confidently show off my natural hair. I was so insecure that I didn’t even realize it. I remember making it clear in front of my natural-haired friends that I had no intention of going that route.

Parker Tashara: How do you prepare yourself for such situations?
Jennifer Washington: You have to be very frank in your communication with others and not afraid to state your point of view clearly. It took me a while to realize that there was nothing wrong with saying things like, “I don’t want to put toxic chemicals in my hair anymore” or “I just want a different path” instead of just saying, “Oh. I’m just trying something new.”
I have this hairstyle. The truth is that I didn’t mean to be defamed; they really have no idea. I guess I had to match my discomfort with their questions and realized there was a middle ground. While it’s not controversial, I believe I changed my mind on a few things by the end of the conversation.
