Marsch began his football career at his university. He first played at Princeton University and scored 16 goals as a midfielder and forward. As for his professional life, he was first drafted by DC United in the third round. There he only played 15 games in two seasons.
Marsch quickly established himself as a fixture in Chicago’s lineup, where he played until 2005. He helped the Fire win the MLS Cup in 1998, giving them three league titles in three years. He also won the US Open Cup three times with Chicago (1998, 2000 and 2003).

Moving on, Marsch signed a two-year contract with RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick in July 2018 to act as his assistant during the 2018-19 season.
