News about Jennifer Finney Boylan

Boylan feels cut off from her former life after coming out as transgender in her 40s. Her new book, she says, is “a memoir about coming of age, told in a way that a foreigner can talk about his country of birth.”

Boylan admits that some members of the transgender community may balk at the idea that she’s been through “adolescence.”

A lot of people believe they’ve always been who they are, and alluding to a previous stage of your life in a different way is really disrespectful, she says. But while I respect that point of view, I had an experience that I can hardly relate to now.

Boylan claims that there were times when she couldn’t say what was on her heart when she was still alive as a boy and later as a man. However, she has never had to hide her love for dogs. Her autobiography is told through the eyes of seven dogs she has cared for over the years.

Sometimes it’s hard for her to remember what life was like in that world, but thinking about dogs, she adds, “it became really clear to her.” The dog I had as a boy was one of them. When I was a teenager, there was a dog. Also, there is one from when I was a student and another from when I was a husband, boyfriend, and father.
