Jeimer Candelario News

One day after being released by the Washington Nationals, Jeimer Candelario made his Cubs debut on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Candelario and right-hander José Cuas were both acquired by the Cubs in a pair of moves on Tuesday, just before the trade deadline. In 99 games with Washington, Candelario, who made his major league debut with the Cubs in 2016, hit.258 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Trey Mancini was designated for assignment by the Cubs in order to make place for Candelario. Mancini hit a career-low. 234 this season with just four home runs. After the lengthy winning streak, President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer made the decision to bring back Candelario to aid in the team’s attempt to make the playoffs this year.

“The manner the team played made it very simple in many ways. We’ve taken a strange path to get where we are in the season, but if you look at how we’ve played from very early June — and we’ve played fantastic baseball — I think you’ll see that we’re a cohesive group. If you examine the underlying data, the squad is even more successful than its record.

“Our infield is pretty strong. We have a great team, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it and this unique team. Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds, 29-year-old switch-hitter Candelario batted sixth and played first base.

Despite not being included on the playoffs roster that year, when the Cubs went on to win the World Series for the first time in 108 years, the Cubs signed Candelario in July 2016. The next season, Candelario was sent to the Detroit Tigers before signing with the Nationals last fall.
