ALABAMA has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Yesterday, founder Jeff Cook lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease. His playing of the violin and guitar has been an important part of the music of my life, and my heart goes out to the ALABAMA family!! pic.twitter.com/3qNKypaYJ7

In 2017, Jeff Cook was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Jeff Cook died Monday of complications from Parkinson’s disease. In 2017, he was diagnosed with the condition, and his bandmates Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry learned about it. Cook stopped traveling in April 2017 when the illness began to affect his health. He told his followers in a statement that the condition affected his coordination and balance and caused him to shake.

According to the statement:

“This makes trying to play guitar, violin, or sing extremely frustrating.” I’ve tried not to burden people with my complicated health condition because I don’t want the music or the fun to stop and that’s not going to change no matter what.”

He continued:

“I’m not going to give up, but sometimes our bodies tell us what we need to do, and my body tells me it’s time to rest and recover.”

Randy Owen leaned across the table and grabbed the water bottle Cook was having trouble opening, uncapped and handed it back to him as he finished reading the statement to USA Today reporters. Owen added that it’s heartbreaking that people believe Cook is drunk when he’s not. Cook realized something was wrong when he couldn’t drop the bait correctly. Then there are the difficulties of playing some notes on the guitar. Randy and Teddy are worried that Cook has had a stroke and Cook’s doctor says he may have Parkinson’s disease. He was later examined, and the findings confirmed his suspicions.
