After 68 years of serving consumers in the community, Jean Ingram gave it up. And those she leaves note that there will be no one like her.
After graduating from Ayr Grammar School at the age of 15, Jean, now 83, began her career in retail. She has run her businesses, Brass Hopper and Table Topper, with iron baton reverence for many years.
While her husband, Alex, became a legend of Ayr United, Jean is known for being the town’s source of gift ideas.
But even she admits that the new High Street’s grip has finally caught up with her tortuous ways.
She noted, “I guess the writing has been on the wall for a while. A lot of Ayrs have been left behind as consumption patterns have changed.
“I’ve always been very fortunate to have loyal customers and I still am, but last year I started to notice a real difference in the way the business is run.
“I’m going to be a very busy idiot trying to get this done,” I thought when the time came.
In Newmarket Street and Queen’s Court, where she had worked for the past forty years, Jean had long been admired. Over the years, its property has become a favorite destination for shoppers in the community. “I cannot look back with regret,” she said.
I used to be proud when the Ayrshire Post called Newmarket Street “the jewel in Ayr’s crown,” but I realized it was time to forget about it. When companies like Watt Brothers struggle to succeed, you know it’s game over.
“There needs to be a rethink and a more coordinated approach to urban government if we want commerce in the city to flourish.” Traders from different companies came together to wish Jean a warm welcome on Friday.
Neighborhood Cafe Le Monde, run by Nino and Karen Pajovic, coordinates flower delivery from neighbours.
“Jean is an institution,” adds Nino, “and he always greets us when we go out.” Karen continued: “There will never be another like her, and to trade as long as she has is truly unbelievable.”
Jean is the inspiration behind everything on this street, according to Jim McSherry, the innkeeper at Wee Windaes in Newmarket Street. Without her, Ayr would be much poorer and she would be greatly missed. Gift shop owner Jools Linda Mitchell continued: “She is one-of-a-kind and we all absolutely adore her.
