Lakshmi Bharathi, known as Jayabharathi, was born on Monday, 28 June 1954 (age 69 years; as of 2023) in Erode, Madras State (now Tamil Nadu), India. Jayabharathi studied at St. Rita Girls’ High School in Erode, Tamil Nadu. When she was five years old, she started learning the classical dance form Bharatanatyam. At the age of 11, she won first prize in a state level dance competition. The then Minister of State Shri. Sundara Vadivelu presented the award to Jayabharathi. Her congratulatory words were that she will become the next big name of the film industry. Although his grandfather was initially against the idea of him becoming an actor, the minister’s words turned into blessings.

Jayabharathi was briefly married to film producer Hari Pothan. They divorced in 1974.
Several years after her divorce, Jayabharathi married actor Sathar in 1979. Their marriage made headlines as Sathar was a relatively new face in the film industry at that time. Furthermore, inter-caste marriages were uncommon in the film industry at that time. Although they separated in 1987, there is no information about their marriage being legally ended, until Sathar’s death in 2019. They have a son, Krish J. Sathar (Unnikrishnan), who is an actor and entrepreneur. Some of her films are Ladies and Gentlemen (2013), Malini 22 Palayamkottai (2014) and To Noora with Love (2014).

Jayabharathi was believed to be in a relationship with film producer Hari Pothan. They were married for less than a year before divorcing in 1974. Even after the divorce, she continued to act in films produced by her production house, Supriya Films. Some of the films of their collaboration are Nakhangal (1973), Itha Ivide Vere (1977), Rathinirvedam (1978), and Alauddinam Albutha Vilakkam (1979).

Jayabharathi debuted as a child artiste in the film Pennmakkal (1966) directed by Sasikumar. In this film she acted as the fifth daughter of Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair. Her first lead role as a singer was Ambili in the film Kattukurangu (1969). In this film she shared screen space with actors Sathyan, Sharda, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and Adoor Bhasi.
She has acted with Prem Nazir, Madhu, Jayan, MG Soman, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. In 1972, she received her first Kerala State Best Actress Award for various films. Some of Jayabharathi’s films in 1972 are Aradimanninte Janmi, Azhimukham, Iniyoru Janmam Thaaru, Mayiladumkunnu, Oru Sundariyude Katha and Manushyabandhangal.
She received the Kerala State Award for Best Actress for the film Madhavikutty in 1973. She played the lead character Madhavikutty in the film.
Jayabharathi’s performance as Rathi in director Bharathan’s film Rathinirvedam (1978) earned a place in the history of Indian cinema for its subject matter and themes. The film gave rise to a debate whether Malayalam films were favoring sexuality on the subject. Despite this, the film became one of the blockbusters of that year. Later it was rebuilt with the same name in the year 2011.
Jayabharathi’s portrayal of Janaki in the Tamil film Marupakkam (1990) won her the National Award – Special Jury Award.
His last appearance in the Malayalam industry was in the film Onnaman (2002). She played the role of the protagonist’s mother in her first Telugu film Janaki (2006).

- In 1972, Jayabharathi received the Best Actress Award at the Kerala State Film Awards for various films.
- In 1973, she won the Kerala State – Best Actress Award for the film Madhavikutty.

Facts/General Knowledge
- The legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar sang the only song in Malayalam for the film Nellu (1974). Jayabharti was the actor in that song sequence of the film.
- Jayabharathi featured in a song sung by Lataji’s sister Asha Bhosle for the 1977 Malayalam film Sujatha.
- The film Allauddinam Albutha Vilakkam, released in multiple languages in the year 1979, featured Jayabharathi in the lead role, Kamal Haasan in the lead role and Rajinikanth in the negative role.
