Barnett, who hails from the western suburbs of Adelaide and is a graduate of Henley High School’s athletic program, entered the limelight before he could complete his studies.

At the age of 16, Barnett moved to Canberra, Australia to enroll at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), and the following year he received his first professional contract with Brisbane Roar.

He previously served in NTC programs alongside current head coach Carl Veart and assistant coach and youth director of youth football Airton Andrioli at the state level.

Barnett left Brisbane Roar in 2019 after three seasons and little first-team activity with them. He made 43 appearances for Melbourne Victory before returning just over two weeks ago. The versatile defender, just 22 years old, has adapted to life on the road and out of pocket, which underpinned Adelaide’s decision to sign him.

“Being there from an early age has shaped me as a footballer and as a person,” says Barnett. “I’ve been fortunate to experience so many great coaches and players during my time at Victory.”

After impressing for 82 minutes for United’s NPL Seniors in a 6-2 win over South Adelaide last weekend, Barnett was included in Veart’s 20-man squad for Sunday’s away game against his former side at Victory.

Barnett, who usually plays in a deep midfield position, is always ready and eager to push forward when needed and his first-team debut for his hometown club means a lot to him. It didn’t really take me long to get used to the style, he said, “because it’s very similar to when I was here six years ago on the State show.”

“Airton and Carl have supported my younger process, and last weekend Airton recommended using that game to re-acquaint myself with the system. “Luckily he and Carl agreed with me, so I’m looking forward to every game until the end.

It has been a whirlwind, but wearing the red shirt for the club I grew up in would be a dream come true. Andrioli agreed, saying after the game that Barnett could be a ‘very valuable asset’ to the A-League side and was ready to fulfill the promise Adelaide had initially seen in him as a junior.

Barnett’s second visit also brought health concerns, as the young midfielder battled a severe case of pericarditis (inflammation of the muscle around the heart) after contracting Covid last January. This failure has been called “the most important obstacle” in the young man’s life.
