Jared Leto talks about drugs, addiction and the ‘epiphany’ that made him stop using

Jared Leto had an honest conversation about addiction and drug use in a new interview.

The 51-year-old musician and 30 Seconds to Mars actor described himself as a “professional drug user” during a conversation with Apple Music.

He also explained the “epiphany” that helped him stop using.

Jared explained that he “grew up in an environment where there were drugs.”

“I mean, I knew what marijuana smelled like, you know, when I was really little. I mean, I remember walking by some trees, some bushes or something, when I was really little. Like maybe, I don’t know, fourth grade or something and telling the other kids, ‘Oh, someone’s smoking pot over there.’ They said, ‘What is marijuana?’ “They didn’t know what that particular spice was,” Jared recalled.

He went on to say, “I was always interested in that. I was always interested in drugs. I was always interested in an experience. I was interested in taking some risks, yes. I think that’s probably common for people who like to experiment or explore.”

The actor acknowledged that addiction was a risk and said that for him “I took it for a spin, and then it sure took me.”

What led you to stop?

“I had an epiphany. I had a moment of clarity, that’s what they call it. And I knew that, hopefully, I wanted to accomplish things in my life that I would be proud of. Do something special with my life,” he explained. “I had a moment of clarity. I had the epiphany that there were two paths I could take in life.”

He went on to say, “I took that path. I’ve had very close friends who didn’t do it and are no longer here. Many.”
