In an interview with guardianThe British singer spoke about how Carrie became his “best, best friend” after they met in a London restaurant in 2003.

“I sat next to [Fisher] at lunch,” he said. “I had just gotten a record deal and was moving to Los Angeles. Carrie’s first question was, ‘What do you do?’ I told him, ‘I left the military to go make an album in Los Angeles.’ Question number two was: ‘Where are you going to live?’ I said I didn’t know. Her response (the third thing she said to me) was: ‘Well, you’re going to live with me.’”

James said he didn’t see Carrie for the first month they lived together, but they eventually became closer.

“I came home one night, sat on the end of his bed, and we talked until morning,” he described. “After that, every time she came back from the studio I would go to her room to talk, no matter if it was 11 at night or 3 in the morning. “She became my best, best friend.”

James also revealed that he wrote a song about visiting Carrie’s house after her death.

“I put my hand on his door and started crying,” he said. “Moments later, one of the open-top Star Map vans that transport tourists around Los Angeles appeared. Over the public address system, the guide read: “To the left of her, she will find the home of the late, great Carrie Fisher… As she can see, some fans are still deeply moved by her passing.” That was me. “I wanted to tell them to fuck off, but I finally found it funny.”
