Jagroop Singh alias Roopa (1992–2022) was an Indian history-sheeter who was a close associate of jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Jagroop was suspected to be one of the eight sharpshooters involved in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case. On 20 July 2022, he was killed in an encounter by Amritsar Police in Bhakna Kalan village of Amritsar.

Jagroop Singh was born in 1992 (age 30 years; as of 2022) in Jaura village of Patti area in Tarn Taran district of Punjab. While in school, Rupa started taking drugs due to the influence of her bad friends. Soon, he left his studies and worked in a motorcycle agency for some time. Jagroop, highly addicted to drugs, started selling household items to buy them. When his family came to know about his drug addiction, they helped him overcome it. However, Jagroop did not stop and started pressurizing his mother to give him money for the drugs. He would often snatch money from his mother and when she refused, he would beat her and pull her hair. Soon he started committing crimes like robbery and dacoity. His family was not happy with his increasing criminal activities and threw him out of their home in 2017.

Jagroop Singh Roops’ father Balwinder Singh is a farmer. Earlier he used to work as a driver, but on the insistence of his younger son, Balwinder left this profession and started farming on his two acres of land in village Jaura. His mother Palwinder Kaur is a housewife. His younger brother, Ranjot Singh, is an Indian Army soldier.

Roopa became involved in criminal activities like robbery and dacoity in his teenage years. When his parents threw him out of the house, he left the village and vowed never to return. Within a short time, he became involved in serious crimes like extortion, fights, assault and attempt to murder. According to the police, Roopa was a Category-B gangster with around 17 crime cases registered against him in cities like Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ferozepur. In some cases he was found guilty and in some cases the court even gave him relief.
Sidhu Moosewala Murder Case
Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by some unknown assailants in Jawaharke village of Mansa on the evening of 29 May 2022. Sidhu was traveling in his Thar jeep with his cousin and a friend at the time of the incident. Reportedly, his vehicle was stopped by a white Bolero and a dark gray Scorpio and soon, the shooters inside the cars started firing at Sidhu; He was soon taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Hours after Moosewala’s murder, Indian gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldie Brar and Sachin Bishnoi claimed responsibility for Sidhu’s murder through their respective Facebook accounts. In June 2022, police revealed the names of eight suspected sharpshooters who were involved in Sidhu’s murder. Apparently he was one of the eight shooters. Other names include Manpreet Singh Mannu, Harkamal alias Ranu from Punjab, Priyavrat Fauji and Manjeet alias Bholu from Haryana, Saurav Mahakal and Santosh Jadhav from Pune and Subhash Banuda from Rajasthan.

Facts/General Knowledge
- While talking to the media, Jagroop’s mother told that she had last seen her son about four years ago. He further said that he used to run away after committing crimes and later the police used to harass him (his family). He also said that if his son is involved in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, then the Punjab Police should shoot him wherever he is found.
- In April 2022, Majitha police had received information that Jagroop and his associate Gursharanjeet used to supply drugs in their black Scorpio and had many illegal weapons. The source told the police that if the police conducted a raid immediately, the sharpshooters could be found at Jagroop’s house with their illegal weapons. As soon as the information was received, the police raided his house. Although Jagroop managed to escape from the house along with his associate Gursharanjit, the police recovered weapons (a pistol with eight bullets and a revolver with 23 live rounds), alleged drug proceeds, Rs 4.92 lakh in cash and an SUV (Scorpio ) seized. His residence. Later, a case was registered against Jagroop and Gursharanjit under sections 21-27A-61-85 of the NDPS Act and sections 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act.
- After Jagroop’s name cropped up in the Sidhu Moosewala case, a police team led by Chief Sub-Inspector Charan Singh of Sarhali police station reached his village to raid him, although the main gate of his house was locked at that time. When his family was later questioned about his absence, Jagroop’s mother told the police that he was not in hiding but had gone to a relative’s place to attend a funeral.
