Tammy’s ex, Brenda Benet, committed suicide weeks after their split
Tammy and days of our lives Actress Brenda Benet began dating after Benet’s second divorce in 1980. They separated in early 1982, and a few weeks later, Brenda committed suicide.
The tragic event put Tammy, then 19, in the spotlight. She later became involved in the feminist movement as an openly gay woman. In a 2006 interview with C-SPANTammy stated that she was technically bisexual and identified as a lesbian by choice.
Bruce prides himself on being a conservative gay woman.
Tammy was an outspoken Democrat in her early life, but began to embrace conservative ideals as time went on. As an openly gay conservative, she asserted that same-sex couples did not uniformly support same-sex marriage and that only heterosexual couples should be allowed to marry.
Bruce then explained that his sexuality and his political views were separate entities. He also claimed that he found greater acceptance as a gay person among conservatives than among liberals. In an article for The GuardianBruce wrote:
So when it comes to my comfort level as a conservative who happens to be gay, here’s what I know: While many conservatives are people of faith and their religion promotes a very different view of homosexuality than I do (and a few other things! !), I have found that conservatives are more tolerant, more curious, and more understanding of those who are different from them than I was when I was installed in the liberal leadership of the United States.”
