Kyrsten Sinema spoiled the Democratic Party’s celebrations after securing a majority in the Senate by becoming an independent. Sinema’s move appears to have further complicated his 2024 re-election bid, as recent polls show him wildly unpopular with Arizona Democrats.
Once the dust settles, Democrats hope Sinema will support President Biden’s partisan and legislative agenda. Sinema stressed that he did not switch allegiances because he had little chance of winning the party’s primaries. “When I ran for the United States Senate, I promised to be independent and work with anyone to achieve lasting results.”

Sinema was married to Blake Dain from October 1995 to March 1999. During an interview with AZCentral, Kyrsten hinted that Dain was several years older than her. When pressed for more details, Sinema said: “I don’t think it’s your business. Not many people ask young people in politics.”

Tammy Baldwin, the openly lesbian Senator from Wisconsin, congratulated Sinema and expressed her happiness that she was no longer the only openly LGBTQ+ US Senator. Sinema celebrated the enactment of the Respect for Marriage Law, which protects the right to marry for the LGBTQ+ community. she tweeted:
“Through our independent leadership, we unite people on both sides to respect religious liberties and ensure that same-sex married couples continue to have the same rights and protections afforded to all married couples.”
