Given the similarities between the two Lord of the Rings gimley and ring of power Turin IV, it is not surprising that they are related. A member of the Shinobi Society, the dwarf warrior Gimli became a fan favorite in both the Peter Jackson novels and trilogy for his selfless and humorous nature. It appears to be a trait passed down from generation to generation, as the dwarf prince of Khazad-dûm, Durin IV, in the Prime Video prequel series, ring of poweralso exhibit some similar behavior.
Tolkien’s classic-breaking TV series doesn’t shy away from Durin IV’s royal line and Tolkien’s addendum Lord of the Rings It is also said that Durin inherited the legacy of the venerable Durin I, the founder of Khazad-dûm and one of the oldest dwarven rulers. Gimli’s background, although classically hinted at, is not discussed much in the film, so the connection between the two may not be clear. However, both roles are important for building relationships outside the dwarven community and for trying to win the respect of kin and other communities.
Gimli was actually a distant relative of Durin IV, as his father Glóin was descended from the Durin line of the dwarf Erebor. These are the dwarves living under the Lonely Mountain, one of the seven species of dwarves (known as Khazâd). Tolkien’s Anthology, Silmarillion, Gives more background information behind these dwarves, their leaders belong to House Durin and hence are also known as Durin Folk. The first king of this dwarven bloodline was the legendary Durin I. Durin I lived over 2300 years, being the oldest of the Dwarf Patriarchs.

Is Gimli a member of the royal family in The Lord of the Rings?

Gimli’s ancestor, Borin, was the brother of Dain I, who ascended the throne and inherited Durin’s blood. Borin has two grandchildren, one of whom is Gimli’s grandfather, Gróin. Gimli has royal pedigree in the books and movies, but couldn’t become king. However, Gimli hardly had any royal ambitions. Instead, he acts as the responsible guardian of the dwarves, his elven allies, and others. On the other hand, Durin IV was forced to become king due to the royal hierarchy ring of power. But according to legend Tolkien will become a glorious monarch.
