Irene Cara was born in New York on March 18, 1959 in the family of Gaspar Escalero and Louise. Her father is a former saxophonist and Puerto Rican industrial worker, while her mother is a Cuban-American cinema doorman. She grew up with two sisters and two brothers, and at the age of 5 she started taking dance classes. At the age of three, Cara was one of five finalists for the Miss America Child pageant, then studied music and theatre.
