Types of Biological Species
The moniker “orangutan” translates to “forest man” in Malay. In their lush lowland habitats, orangutans lead solitary lives. They devour wild fruits like lychees, mangosteens, and figs, while quenching their thirst from tree cavities. For sleep and respite, they fashion nests from vegetation in lofty branches. Adult male orangutans tip the scales at a whopping 200 pounds. Flanged males boast pronounced cheek pads known as flanges and sport a throat sac employed for emitting resounding vocalizations, aptly named long calls. On the other hand, an unflanged male bears a resemblance to an adult female. In a one-of-a-kind biological occurrence within the primate world, an unflanged male has the ability to transition to a flanged male, a process not yet comprehensively elucidated.
Bornean and Sumatran orangutans exhibit slight disparities in both appearance and behavior. While both don shaggy reddish fur, Sumatran orangutans flaunt lengthier facial hair. Reports suggest that Sumatran orangutans foster tighter social connections compared to their Bornean counterparts. Bornean orangutans have a higher propensity to descend from treetops and move about on the ground. Both species have encountered drastic population declines. Just a century ago, the total orangutan count likely surpassed 230,000, but as per the latest data, Bornean orangutans hover around 104,700 (Endangered), and Sumatran orangutans barely number 7,500 (Critically Endangered) within their revised geographical ranges.
A third orangutan species was unveiled in November 2017. With a meager population of no more than 800 individuals, the Tapanuli orangutan claims the title of the most endangered among all great apes.
